Year 4

Year 4

In Year 4 we hope to create an exciting, reflective and stimulating learning environment, that provides opportunities for every child to learn. We hope to equip your child with the necessary skills to succeed inside and outside of school, through balancing the usage of new technology with older, more traditional, methods. At Dukesgate we teach a broad and challenging curriculum to ensure that all children enjoy school and continue to develop their love of learning. Reading continues to be a focus, with children enjoying daily reading in school. We encourage independent reading time and a wide selection of books in our class library is available for children to read at home.

Literacy

Year 4 children should be able to write down their ideas with a reasonable degree of accuracy and with good sentence punctuation. We will be consolidating pupils’ writing skills, their vocabulary and their grasp of sentence structure. Teaching them to develop as writers involves teaching them to enhance the effectiveness of what they write as well as increasing their competence.  A main focus in Year 4 will be on spelling and grammar.  Joined handwriting will be used in Year 4.

Mathematics

In Year 4 maths teaching will require children to work with accuracy and develop mathematical reasoning so they can analyse shapes and their properties, and confidently describe the relationships between them. They will learn to use measuring instruments with accuracy and make connections between measure and number. By the end of year 4, children should have memorised their multiplication tables up to and including the 12 multiplication table.

Science

We teach science weekly, encouraging children to explore the world around them, ask questions and carry out simple tests. Children will begin to use simple equipment, making measurements and collecting results. They will begin to think about how to make test fair and will use their observations and results to reach simple conclusions.

Foundation Subjects

We teach the Foundation Subjects with a focus on powerful knowledge, always encouraging to make links to prior learning. We aim to provide real experiences. We believe that children learn by doing, so we take them on several educational visits, invite speakers into school, bring in artefacts and interesting objects, and use our environment to spark learning. The topic work is carefully planned to allow children to make links between different areas of learning.

Religious Education

It is very much the ethos of the school that we foster and develop the approach of understanding, consideration and respect for self and others. We use an enquiry based approach to RE, providing children with the opportunity to reflect upon not only their own beliefs, but also those of others.

This will be ensured through our religious education which is mainly Christian but also includes the study of other world religions and cultures, based on the SACRE agreed syllabus.  We have daily acts of collective worship, which are broadly Christian in nature. Parents have the right to withdraw their children from these on religious grounds.
