Year 2

Year 2

In Year 2 we aim to provide the balance of a challenging and stimulating curriculum which enthuses the children to become creative, hardworking, independent learners. We work hard to ensure that all children are challenged in their lessons, and children regularly have the opportunity to review their own learning. We believe that it is important for children to enjoy school and enjoy learning and this will be something we strive to achieve.

English, Reading and Phonics

We continue to teach phonics every day, following the Read, Write, Inc programme. We work hard on the technical skills of writing such as handwriting, punctuation and spelling. Children are encouraged to write each day, using quality texts, and we link writing opportunities to real experiences where possible.

Mathematics

We teach lots of different mathematical skills within our daily maths lesson. We focus on counting objects accurately, knowing our number bonds, reasoning about numbers and developing effective calculation strategies. We use practical resources to help us make sense of abstract concepts.

Science

We teach science weekly, encouraging children to explore the world around them, ask questions and carry out simple tests. Children will begin to use simple equipment, making measurements and collecting results. They will begin to think about how to make tests fair, and will use their observations and results to reach simple conclusions.

Foundation Subjects

We teach the Foundation subjects with a focus on powerful knowledge, always encouraging children to make links to prior learning. We aim to provide real experiences. We believe that children learn by doing, so we take them on several educational visits, invite speakers into school, bring in artefacts and interesting objects, and use our environment to spark learning.

Religious Education

It is very much the ethos of the school that we foster and develop the approach of understanding, consideration and respect for self and others. We use an enquiry based approach to RE, providing children with the opportunity to reflect upon not only their own beliefs, but also those of others.

This will be ensured through our religious education which is mainly Christian but also includes the study of other world religions and cultures, based on the SACRE agreed syllabus.  We have daily acts of collective worship, which are broadly Christian in nature. Parents have the right to withdraw their children from these on religious grounds.
