Art and Design

Intent

At Dukesgate Academy our Art and Design curriculum provides children with opportunities to develop their skills using a range of media and materials. Children learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles, 3D work and digital art and are given the opportunity to explore and evaluate different creative ideas. Children will be introduced to a range of works and develop knowledge of the styles and vocabulary used by famous artists.

In Art, children are expected to be reflective and evaluate their work, thinking about how they can make changes and keep improving. This should be meaningful and continuous throughout the process, with evidence of age-related verbal and written refection. Children are encouraged to take risks and experiment and then reflect on why some ideas and techniques are successful or not for a particular project.

The aims of our Art and Design curriculum are to develop pupils who:

  •  Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Implementation

We follow the United Learning Art Curriculum, which is high quality, well thought out and planned to demonstrate progression year on year. This gives pupils the skills, knowledge and vocabulary that they need to move forward with their learning, alongside opportunities to apply their knowledge to different situations. We measure the impact of our curriculum using the following methods:

  • Pupil discussions about their learning including discussion of their thoughts, ideas, processing and evaluations of work.
  • A reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes.
  • Images and videos of the children’s practical learning.

Impact

We follow the United Learning Art Curriculum, which is high quality, well thought out and planned to demonstrate progression year on year. We measure the impact of our curriculum using the following methods:

  • A reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes
  • Opportunities for work to be displayed beyond the classroom, such as on corridors, in a progressive way through the year groups
  • Post learning quizzes that measure the understanding of the unit
  • Pupil discussions about their learning; which includes discussion of their thoughts, ideas, processing and evaluations of work.

Our Art curriculum is also planned in a way that promotes cultural capital. All children will learn the same skills and have the opportunity to realise their talents and develop their character through self-expression. Children will be exposed to a wide range of experiences that will enhance their skills development and provide them with knowledge about a wider range of culture.
